Wisconsin Substance Abuse Statistics

Like the rest of the United States, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction are a major public health concern in the State of Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin Epidemiological Profile on Alcohol and Other Drug Use, since 2004, the number of drug-related deaths in the state has slowly increased, although the number is still lower than the national rate. In 2004, there was an average of 6.7 drug-related deaths per 100,000 state residents, compared to 11.3 in 2012. In 2012, over 630 people in the state lost their lives as a result of illicit drug use.

Heroin and the abuse of other opioids are becoming increasingly problematic all over the state. From 2003 to 2012, the number of deaths as a result of these drugs increased steadily, going from only 5% to 27%. According to Wisconsin’s Bureau of Communicable Diseases and Emergency Response, hepatitis C incidence in the state increased by 12% from 2006 to 2013, and it is thought that a majority of these new cases are a direct result of IV drug use.

With these new drug-related illnesses and injuries has also come an increase in drug-related hospitalizations in the state. In 2012, nearly 15,500 people were hospitalized due to drug-related diagnoses, including dependence, positioning, drug-related polyneuropathy, or drug psychoses. This number had increased by 15% since 2004. Likewise, the number of alcohol-related hospitalizations increased by about 8% from 2003 to 2012, leading to over 48,000 hospitalizations in 2012.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, consequences of alcohol use in Wisconsin are even more significant. In 2012, over 48,200 people in the state passed away, and of this number, approximately 1,750 deaths were attributable to the excessive use of alcohol. The majority (at 58%) of these alcohol-attributable deaths were due to acute causes like poisonings, falls, and motor vehicle accidents. Of the 615 automobile accident deaths reported in 2012, 39% involved alcohol. Likewise, of the 372 drivers who lost their lives, 125 had a BAC over the legal limit.
